Hell No to the Status Quo

Author: Kathleen OR Crew Created: 2/26/2008 4:23 PM
Welcome to Kathleen's blog...

Kathleen and her team bust their buns here to bring you a dose of inspiring, informative and funny stuff you can actually use. Sometimes it will be specific to our show--more insight on a topic or featured guest. Other times it will just be something that grabbed us—a nugget we felt was worthy of your time (or at the very least, a big belly laugh). Enjoy!

Help! We're looking to collect photos of "Side Effects" DVDs on store shelves throughout the country.

Katherine Heigl image

As most of you know, my film Side Effects starring Katherine Heigl was released on DVD by Warner Bros. last Tuesday. Since this has been such a long time coming, we thought it would be a hoot to collect photos of the DVDs on the shelves of retailers across the country.

Side Effects starring Katherine HeiglSo grab your cell phone and head into your local Target, Walmart, Sam's, etc. If you see Side Effects, snap a picture and email it to me letting me know the store/city. (Even more fun would be to get your mug in the photo too.) I'll post several in an upcoming blog with mentions/links (if you want a link) back to the sender and will also share the love on Twitter, FB, etc.

Following is a sighting from Target in my fair city of Madison, Wisconsin. (Not sure what to think about the fact that we're right next to the man who played  Deuce Bigalow.) Ha!

But wait...we're also right under the new Mr. Bond. I'll definitely take it. (smile)

Does it get any better than this?

Maya Angelou image: The Kathleen Show Kristen Martini image

Every week I have a great time putting the program together--the monologues, the guest interviews, the Pick of the Week--but this weekend's show is one I will treasure for the rest of my life. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed hosting/producing.

My guests include....

  • The one and only Ms. Maya Angelou. Maya shares some surprising turning points in her illustrious career as a dancer, poet, playwright, author, and director. She also talks about her unique writing process...how she puts those magnificent words on the page (yellow tablets to be exact), her painful but useful childhood, and her deep feelings for her 'daughter', Oprah Winfrey.
  • Realizing that money (and even antidepressants) couldn't fill the unexplainable hole in her life, Kristen Martini walked away from it all. EveryTHING. A life of luxury including a several thousand square foot house, country club memberships (yes, plural) and all the hot clothes that money could buy...to a small cottage in the woods and her most authentic, happiest self.

Tune in this weekend and if you miss it, listen online next week.

"Smart and sexy comedy" gives you glimpse behind the scenes of big pharma

After playing to sold out crowds across the country and splashed across the press, my indie film Side Effects, starring Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy, Knocked Up), has finally (5 years later!) been released today on DVD by Warner Brothers.

Side Effects was loosely based on my decade of pushing pills for big pharma and my goal was to get everyone to think twice before they pop that next prescription pill and have a few laughs along the way. And although we were working with a very low budget and under a huge time crunch, we had a ton of fun on set and are proud to be part of a film with such an important message. (And yes, Katherine Heigl was charming and sexy and funny as heck in the film.)

If you've been waiting patiently to get your hands on a copy, look for Side Effects at a store near you, or visit the Warner Brothers Website to order the film today.

You'll laugh, be shocked, and walk away a better consumer.

And a special thank you to everybody who has been supportive of Side Effects, and my work on this topic, over the years.

Life on the other side of the microphone...

Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau image The Kathleen Show Koren Motekaitis image

A couple of weeks ago, Koren Motekaitis, host of the radio show How She Really Does It, asked me to be a guest on her program. It was fun to be on the flip side of the microphone for a change and we had a great chat about listening to your gut and following your passion.

How She Really Does It airs on KDRT 95.7 FM in Davis, CA, but like The Kathleen Show, you can catch it online anytime you want, from anywhere.

Listen in as Koren puts me in the hot seat.

The interview is now available online.

HPV vaccine debate: Christiane Northrup on The Kathleen Show

Whether or not to vaccinate our daughters with the HPV vaccine is one of the most gut wrenching decisions parents will have to make. (And the word on the street is that boys are next).

Do the potential benefits outweigh the known risks? Where is the long term safety data? Who (or should we say 'which company') is behind the push to mandate this vaccine for all girls?

Dr. Christiane Northrup weighs in and helps provide a perspective you may not hear in your doctor's office.

Listen to my interview with Dr. Northrup HERE. And if you want to hear my monologue comments on this issue, be sure to click 'whole show' as I had a thing or two of my own to say.

Would LOVE to hear from you on this one. (And thank you to everyone who submitted questions prior to the interview...they really helped frame the interview.)

I wrote this article because I had to. Because I felt compelled to share what I know with fellow moms, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers.

Thank you to everyone who read, commented, emailed, blogged, Twittered, and Facebooked this piece.

This isn't about sensationalizing. It's about becoming savvier consumers/patients. It's about protecting our kids, our husbands, our parents, ourselves.

Sundance winner Fuel

I just interviewed Josh Tickell, the director of this fantastic film that is coming to a theater near you (and then on DVD). Spread the word! Fuel is a film that could greatly impact future generations.

The interview with Josh will air this weekend and then be available online next week. In the mean time, check out the Fuel trailer above as well as their website thefuelfilm.com

Food is a drug...with both effects and side effects.

Toxic Food - The Kathleen Show

Your refrigerator is a pharmacy and every bite triggers a hormonal chain reaction that has effects and side effects. Many of our greatest health problems--including weight gain, diabetes, depression, cancer and low energy--are a direct result of what we eat.

On the flip side, used wisely, food can become the drug of choice for reducing inflammation, creating  hormone balance, and reducing toxic fat.

Learn how to make food work for you, not against you.
It really is as simple as that next forkful.

Listen to my interview with Dr. Barry Sears, international expert on the hormonal effects of food and the New York Times best-selling author of numerous books including The Zone and Toxic Fat.
