Welcome to Kathleen's blog...

Kathleen and her team bust their buns here to bring you a dose of inspiring, informative and funny stuff you can actually use. Sometimes it will be specific to our show--more insight on a topic or featured guest. Other times it will just be something that grabbed us—a nugget we felt was worthy of your time (or at the very least, a big belly laugh). Enjoy!

My all organic weekend...(incredible)

We hope to officially launch the new blog/social networking template in the next 30 days. We'll have a huge party and invite you to come join us in grabbing life and health by the...!

Catch our Side Effects leading lady in The Ugly Truth this weekend

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend or just need a good laugh, don’t miss Katherine Heigl (our leading lady in Side Effects) and Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth.  The film opens nationwide on Friday, July 24.

Yes, it’s a romantic comedy, but guys, we promise it’s more on the saucy side (rated R even!).  So check out the trailer above and if you’re up for it, find out the ‘ugly truth’ about what makes men and women tick.

Once it’s over, if you’re needing some more Katherine Heigl, there’s always Side Effects on DVD…still at a store near you.

And if you want to know what it's really like to work with Katherine Heigl (the gritty details), be sure to read Kathleen's  Huffington Post piece.

Serving up a healthy glass (or bowl) of milk

This entry has been re-posted for Food Renegade’s Fight Back Friday

Why choose organic milk?

1.    No pesticides
2.    No antibiotics
3.    No growth hormones

Most of the milk you buy at the grocery store is chock full of the above three--lovely stuff that wreaks havoc on us as adults but is even more harmful to our kids who guzzle it down by the glassful. You can avoid all of this and serve up a healthy, tasty glass of milk by choosing organic.

Here are three more ‘feel good’ reasons to choose organic:

4.    Happy cows
5.    Happy environment
6.    Really cool farmers

With some of the tortuous conditions on many factory farms coming to light, choosing organic is another way to express our human decency. Many of the farmers who choose to go organic do so for a love of the animals and of the land. Organic farming practices are often gentler on the critters as well as Mother Earth.

And if you get a chance, give your local organic farmer a hug…they are working their buns off to deliver you healthy and safe food.

Even better than a hug, buy organic. This one’s a no-brainer. The extra you’re spending per gallon is an investment in your family’s health, the planet, and peace of mind.

Health care reform minus the politics...really.

This is such an important show we wanted to make sure it was on your radar well in advance.  Don’t miss Howard Dean, former presidential candidate, six-term Governor and physician, talking to Kathleen about the heart of the health care debate. (Kathleen is asking that everyone leaves their party at the door.)

The two will cut through the politics and discuss the plain and simple facts behind possible solutions that could help every American receive affordable medical care.  So if you’re lost in the health care reform debate (who isn’t?), you’ll want to hear this straight-shooting show on the essential info we all need to know.

The interview will air Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2 on stations across the country.  And if you can’t tune in then, we’ll have it online the following week.

Have a question for Howard Dean?  Be one of the first five people to send us a question for the show and we'll send you a copy of his latest book, Howard Dean's Prescription for Real Health Care Reform

Here's what we're celebrating this year…

We can hardly believe it ourselves, but The Kathleen Show has officially been on the air three years this month.  So to mark the occasion, we thought we’d do a little rewind. Here are some of the highlights we didn’t want you to miss…

This year we got rid of the clutter with Oprah’s organization sensation Peter Walsh and took control of our money with Jean Chatzky.  We dug behind the pharma marketing and got the real facts behind the HPV vaccine with Dr. Christiane Northrup.  Another favorite doc of ours, Dr. Michael Roizen, gave us the secrets for looking great from the inside out.  While the great Maya Angelou helped us let go of our crappy childhoods to live our best, most creative lives.  Then, food crusader Michael Pollan gave us a wake up call about what we’re really eating (aka “edible food-like substances”).

And when she wasn’t chatting up the best and the brightest in the country, Kathleen was welcoming new listeners on 107.1 FM in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and in Grand Junction, Colorado on 580 AM.  The show is now heard in seven different states and online/via podcast for our listeners across the country.  Not to mention Kathleen caught a few ears when the tables were turned and she was interviewed on Oprah Radio earlier this month.

But the biggest moment this year came when The Kathleen Show was recognized as one of the top 50 programs in the nation by Talkers Magazine (we didn’t see that one coming!).

So a big thank you to all of our listeners, blog and newsletter subscribers, Facebook friends and Twitter followers who have supported the show.  Not sure how Kathleen is going to top all of that. But keep on listening, and I’m sure you’ll find out.

Got a favorite show, guest or topic from this past year?  Tell us about it.

Why choosing organic is even more important for our children's sake

kids and pesticides

According to nationally renowned pediatrician William Sears M.D. pesticides cause more harm to children than adults. Read the full entry to find out the specific reasons kids and pest-killers don’t mix.

Who’ll make the better ‘Pharm Girl’?

Katherine Heigl and Reese Witherspoon images

We have some movie news that our “Side Effects”/Katherine Heigl fans won’t want to miss.

Universal Pictures recently announced they’re taking on the drug industry with “Pharm Girl”, an upcoming comedy starring Reese Witherspoon.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project centers on a woman who gets a job at a pharma powerhouse but begins to see the underbelly of the industry as she rises through the company's ranks.

Universal should give Kathleen a call, don’t you think?   Not only does the plot of “Pharm Girl” ring true to her own experience pushing pills for a decade, but it’s also similar to the story behind her debut film “Side Effects” starring Katherine Heigl (closely based on her life in the pharmaceutical industry).

Want to see these films?  You're going to have to wait a while before “Pharm Girl” hits the theaters (they’re still in development).  But in the meantime, you can grab your popcorn and watch "Side Effects", which exploded in the press and was released on DVD earlier this year by Warner Bros.

And we’re dying to know what you think…which blonde bombshell will make the better ‘Pharm Girl’?

Also, for a little insider info, read here to find out what Kathleen thought about working with Katherine Heigl.

 When Your Child is 6-12

Kids 6-12

Any one who has a kid in this age group must read When Your Child is 6-12 by John M. Drescher.

I have a 7 and a 10-year-old and this book rattled and inspired me (and made me realize the clock is ticking!) in terms of my ability to have a meaningful impact on my kids' lives. More commentary to come soon.  But for now, put this one on your summer reading list.

Have you read this book yet?  I’d love to hear your thoughts for a potential upcoming show.

And for some other kick-butt parenting tips, listen to my interview with Rabbi Shmuley (father of eight!).

I'm a filmmaker, writer, and talk radio host. After a decade of schlepping drugs for big pharma, I finally got the ovaries to walk away from my career as a pill pusher and share what I knew on the big screen.
